Book Report on The Little Prince

The noted British philosopher Francis Bacon once said, "Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability". I can't agree more. Indeed, reading is a special kind of recreation as well as a rewarding sort of life experience. At different times or under different circumstances, even though the same person reading the same book, sentiment attained still vary considerably sometimes. As a matter of fact, I have read The Little Prince twice before, and when I first heard its dreamlike title, I regarded it as a childish and superficial fairy tale on account of my preconceived notion. However, such idea was quickly overturned by myself, and I have to say it is really a readable good book which can heal people's souls to a large extent.

The Little Prince is a famous children's short story written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The author is the most mysterious pilot writer in the history of French literature, who had devoted all his life to freedom and to exploring the unknown of life from aviation. In 1943, he finished this book but unfortunately disappeared in an aerial reconnaissance mission in 1944, thereafter, his legendary career gradually faded in the sky, leaving only people's infinite reverie of this hero's final life destination.

The protagonist of this book is a little prince from an alien plant, and the plot of this story is very simple, mainly tells the little prince's later experience of leaving his own planet. He visited six nearby planets altogether, and the first of which was ruled by a king who was a power visionary. The second planet was inhabited by a conceited man who was addicted to his own vanity every day, and the third planet existed an alcoholic who is trapped in chaos and confusion. On the fourth planet lived a businessman longing for proving his worth by possessing more stars. The fifth planet was just big enough for accommodating a street lamp and a lamplighter who was blindly devoted to his duties but did not know how to adapt to the changes of the outside world. On the sixth planet lived a learned geographer, he was a conceited dogmatist out of touch with reality. His seventh visited plant was just earth, but unfortunately, the place where the little prince landed was the Sahara Desert, so at first, he didn't see a person there. Through the little prince's perspective as a child, the author illustrates the emptiness, stupidity and arrogance of adults as well as their loneliness and solitude. When dealing with thousands of roses on earth, the little prince found his rose was not unique indeed, but when the fox told him, "You have a duty to tame what you have ever domesticated", he chose to go back to his planet and look for his beloved rose. The little prince tamed the fox, and the rose tamed the little prince. Virtually, the little prince is fragile, he can't bear the pain of missing, so he chose to use venom to cast away his heavy body. In the end, although his soul was free, he can never return to his planet to see his planet.

The Little Prince is a fairy tale belonging to adults, especially those who still have childlike innocence. For children, they are unable to understand the little prince's thorough sadness in bones and heavy love. They shouldn't have realized these too early, instead, they should have enjoyed a happy time in a sunny world. Actually, it's more of a tragedy than a fairy tale. Heroes in fairy tales always live a happy life, like Snow White or Cinderella. However, the little prince died in the desert after discovering the true meaning of love. After reading The Little Prince, I am deeply attracted by the author's understanding of loss and cherishment. Therefore, I begin to try to ponder on the most elusive topic of cherishing. The majority of powerless things in life are resulted from not knowing how to cherish the present. In most cases, it is fruitless to repent until you lose it. Everyone of us can not become the authentic little prince, it's an indisputable fact. Despite all this, we can still find our own shores in the bustling world, because we have the same pure heart as the little prince's. As we all know, childhood is an embodiment of nicety, we can't ask God to halt time and let every moment become immortal, but we can cherish every moment of the present, so as to make our life full of sunshine.
