A Book Reflection of The Great Gatsby
This book tells a story about a man named Jay Gatsby. The narrator of the story is called Nick Carraway. Nick came to the West Egg of Long Island in the east of New York for a living. And it is Gatsby who lives next door to him. Across the bay are Nick's cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan's family.
Gatsby was born in a humble family, but he fell in love with Daisy, a young lady born in a wealthy family. In order to catch up with Daisy, he waited for five years to purchase the mansion and hold a grand banquet every week just for her. But the way he making money is not legal due to the prohibition. Later, with Nick's help, they met again, and soon expressed their love. But one night, Daisy drove the car and accidentally killed Tom's lover Myrtle. Gatsby was reluctant to reveal the truth and wanted to put the blame on himself. And this led to Gatsby being shot by Myrtle's husband George. Most tragically, at Gatsby's funeral, only one of his guests and his father had come, not even Daisy. She traveled to Europe with Tom and her child.
In this book, we can see the bustle and prosperity of New York in the 1920s, including the widespread use of cars and telephones. It was called the jazz age. But the people in it are selfish, indifferent and vain. When Gatsby was alive, his banquet was always splendid and full of uninvited people. But when he died, no one cared. It's just a snobby world with luxury and dissipation. Let's say Gatsby and Daisy. One never gives up for ideal and love, whereas one chooses cowardice and indifference in front of love. So at Nick's last meeting with Gatsby, Nick said to him: They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole bunch put together. That's why Nick finally chose to leave the city that disappointed him.
And in this book, the "green light" on Daisy's dock has unique and rich significance. It represents Gatsby's dream--to get a host of wealth and to be with Daisy. The author uses it three times. The first green light symbolizes Gatsby's pursuit of his dream. And the second symbolizes his realization of the dream, and the third symbolizes the transcendence of his dream.
What impresses me most in this book is that we can see Gatsby's concentration and persistence from the timetable he wrote in the book when he was a child. Reading enriches people, and all learning becomes character. This may also be a contributor for Gatsby's greatness, but it also indirectly led to his final tragedy.
At the end of The Great Gatsby, the author says: So, we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. Just as he says, we can't repeat the past. Gatsby and Daisy can't go back to the past. But we can look forward to a better future. I hope that after reading this book, we can all adhere to our deepest belief, pursue our dreams and never lose ourselves.
