In the novel, Hemingway used Santiago's words to shout out a man's declaration: a man is not born to be defeated, you can destroy him, but you will never defeat him.

The main themes of Hemingway's novels are "human nature, human effort and struggle, human pursuit and pain, human faith and struggle, human stubbornness and value, human intelligence and fate, human courage and boldness, human dignity and soul." Even if one fails, one should be honest without losing the "grace" under heavy pressure.
