The play describes a penniless noble young Bassanio in Venice, in order to propose to the rich daughter Portia, friend Antonio to borrow money.Antonio had to borrow money from Shylock, a Jew-usurer, because the freighter had not yet arrived at the port. He was forced to make a covenant: if he did not pay the debt as scheduled, Shylock would be allowed to cut a pound of Antonio's flesh.Bassanio and Portia fall in love at first sight, but Antonio's cargo ship is in distress and he will be fined a pound of flesh when the debt is due.Portia resolutely pretended to be a lawyer and went to Venice to rescue Antonio.At the court, Portia, with amazing intelligence, confesses Shylock and wins the case.
