The Old Man and the Sea is set in mid-20th century Cuba. The main character is an old fisherman named Santiago, and the supporting character is a child named Manolin. The old fisherman went eighty-four days without catching a fish, but he refused to give up. On the eighty-fifth day he finally hooked a big marlin, eighteen feet long and weighing fifteen hundred pounds. The fish pulled the boat out to sea, but the old man held on even though he had no water, no food, no weapon, no helper and the cramp in his left hand did not dishearten him. After two days and nights he finally killed the fish and tied him to the side of the boat. But at once many sharks came to rob him of his prize. He killed them one by one, until at last he only had a broken tiller for a weapon. As a result, the big fish still cannot escape the fate of being eaten up, finally, the old man exhausted to drag back a pair of fish bones. He went home and lay in bed, dreaming of the good old days and forgetting the cruel reality.
