Bassanio was a gentleman of the poor, living on debt. Antonio was a rich man, but it happened that the money was used for the goods of the voyage. He thought that he could return to his capital in two months and make a lot of money, but the ship full of goods had an accident. Even when Bassanio finally begs to pay Shylock three times the cost, Shylock is still unmoved. When the case was brought to the Venetian court, the judge, the duke, even begged for mercy for Antonio, but the case went on as before, because at the last moment Shylock did not show his mercy. Shylock's hatred and resentment towards Antonio can be seen from the following words: "He has insulted me, robbed me of hundreds of thousands of businesses, ridiculed my losses, ridiculed my gains, insulted my nation, destroyed my business, divided my friends and incited my enemies; What's his reason? Just because I'm a Jew."
