A Tale of Two Cities wins mainly by its plot structure. The characters fall basically into two groups. One is the embodiment of humanity, such as Dr Manette, Lucie, Darnay and Carton; The other is the avenging personification of the Defarge couple, Jacques, and the frenzied masses of the French Revolution. The two sides are opposite, the rampart is clear, in the sharp contradiction conflict shows its distinctive character characteristic. The caricature that Dickens likes to use is fully embodied in this novel.
