Duansheng Building313, Nov.11th--Recently, a specially organized book sharing activity launched by Dr. Li, was held successfully. Our group chose a medium-length novel by Jack London named The Call of the Wild to read and share. Jack London was a realistic writer who wrote eagerly to find out the answer of what is life, what is strength and what is beauty. In his writing, he often put characters into an extremely severe situation to demonstrate strength and beauty of human nature.

The Call of the Wild tells a dog’s dramatic experience into the primitive from the dog’s point of view. Buck, the leading character of the novel, used to be a docile dog growing up in the Judge Miller’s place. Unfortunately, after Buck was stolen and trafficked, he was forced to leave the warm South and struggle in the cold and cruel North as a sled dog. The picture of surviving in the North was overly wretched and savage. The fierce dogs and humans alike, knew no law but the law of club and fang. Nonetheless, when life had struck on him, Buck did not yield to the endless and merciless torment. Instead, the dominant primordial beast was strong in Buck, and under the fierce conditions of trail life, it grew and grew leading him to win the first place among the sled dogs by defeating Spitz, the dog king. However, the master named Hal was extremely cruel and greedy. Buck was treated as not a flesh-and-blood creature, but a tool to use or a slave to torture. When Hal beat Buck black and blue and dying, John Thornton's timely rescue made Buck feel warm. In return, Buck made painstaking efforts to save John’s life many times without thinking twice. But the death of John threw him into overwhelming sorrow and pain, which led buck to make firm determination to go to the wilderness and return to nature. The whole story was like a lifetime journey-not only for Buck, but for our human beings. Life was not a bed of roses, and there were always ups and downs. Everyone is a traveler on the road to find the true meaning of life.

Our group arranged two meetings in preparation for the final reading seminar. Everyone was involved and brainstormed on the thought-provoking topics about the book. One of the group members, Guolan Zhiyi, made a point that Buck’s experience back to nature is somehow like a man’s whole life. We all had a carefree puppyhood as a spoiled boy. However, as time went by, we were forced to cross miles of frustration and rivers of raging. We staggered and stumbled down pathways of trouble in hope of a better future. Besides, Wu Yili shared the background information she searched online. She claimed that in 18th and 19th century, an American immigrant found a gold ore in California, and thus thousands moved to northland of America to prospect for gold. She agreed that the urgent need of excellent dogs was what had triggered Buck’s adventure into the primitive. With the joint effort, we finally completed the specific arrangements and finished our heated discussion. To make our drafts more appealing, everyone sacrificed the spare time and burned the midnight oil.

When the final reading seminar came, the group members showed the results of what we had discussed about the book. The audience as well as the teacher present were all impressed with our witty remarks and unique insight. As I squared my shoulder and delivered my speech on stage, satisfaction and exhilaration found their way to my rosy cheek. And we all felt our effort had paid off when receiving thunderous applause from the class. Through this specially designed book sharing activity, everyone stepped closer to the marvelous and fascinating world presented by the book. It served as a platform for us book lovers to share our ideas about the “beloved treasure”. It’s delightful that tons of effort employed in preparing for the salon turned out to be a huge success.
