Sister Carrie's desire and drive
黄金玉
Sister Carrie tells the story of a rural girl who goes to the city to make a living and becomes a famous actress. This paper mainly uses Lacan's new psychoanalysis theory to make a psychological analysis of the heroine, from her anxiety to meet the basic physiological needs, to her ideal self shaping, and finally to her endless desires. In the analysis process, this paper also involves some feminist criticism theories, aiming to explain how Carrie cultivated her sense of self-independence, changed from passive to active, and finally became an independent career-oriented woman after abandoning the virtuous wife and mother type and "degenerate" into a lover type.

listThe images of Carrie and Hurstwood are treated as flat as possible. The former becomes what they meet, while the latter tries to change the status quo but goes from bad to worse. Dreiser's naturalistic writing method does not set up the ambition of "typical characters", but reveals a feeling that all living beings are suffering and all are doomed.
