The characteristic of the old man

In the novel, we can find out the old man was quiet conserned about the young boy. When he was fighting against difficulties, the young boy was his life spiral. Also, preseverance must be a suitable word to describe the old man, which was accompanied with him all the journey. The sharks attack the boat, he used harpoon to defend. Losing his harpoon, he tied the knief on the oar to create a new weapon. Even he lost everything sharp, he still beat the shark with the broken oar, although it made little sense. What's more, opitmism and courage were the lebel we know before reading the book. Indeed, we can discover the precious and shining characters as we follow the pave of the old man. He would be grateful for catching such a big fish, showing his pleasure to the god.

  Santiago loves the sea for everything it has given him and he deeply respects the great fish at the same time as he struggles to kill it because it is noble and beautiful. He develops a relationship with the fish based on what he takes to be mutual respect, like the relationship between the bullfighter and the bull.

  The old man had talked of the boy for several times wishing the boy could be with him when he was on the sea, but it can't be. Which showed his loneliness and his wishes for the aid from the boy, because with the boy, the old man would be more lively and strengthful. In reality, the boy was forced to leave the old man by his parents, so the old man could only do anything alone, but he never give up and he was always hopeful and self- encouraged.
