Bertha Mason was considered as a mad woman by Rochester and other servants in the manor. Although not often referred during the whole story, she is the supporting character that impressed me the most. She marries Rochester on the family's orders. After marriage, Rochester considers her insolent and imprisons her in the attic of the castle. However, as far as I am concerned, the image of Bertha as a crazy woman has always been given by Rochester and the truth is what they themselves say. In the novel, Bertha never said a word, she is not a little discourse power, all discourse power only in the hands of Rochester. This shows that the status of women was low at that time, but Bertha, like Jane, did not want to be imprisoned, so she hurt Rochester who imprisoned her and her brother who also thought she was crazy. Although she was imprisoned for many years, she could achieve purposeful revenge, which shows that she is sane, only because she disobeyed Rochester, she ended up in a tragic end.
