What's the theme of the Old Man and the Sea?
Maybe it is about perseverance.
Although the old man has not caught a fish for eighty-four days, he doesn’t blame anyone or give up. Instead, he defies the bad luck and keeps going out, even redoubling his efforts and going our further than anyone else into the open sea.
The marlin also perseveres. It does not surrender but uses its size and strength to pull the old man’s skiff even farther out to sea, making it an even more formidable adversary.
The battle between the old man and the fish is more than a trial of strength — it is also a battle of wills.

This article tells a story about an old Cuban fisherman fighting with a huge marlin in the gulf stream far from the shore. Although the old man in Hemingway's works is tragic, he has Nietzsche's "superman" quality, calmly accepts failure, calmly and bravely faces death. These "tough men" reflect Hemingway's philosophy of life and moral ideal, that is, human beings do not bow to the fate, never surrender the spirit of a fighter and a positive and optimistic attitude towards life.

鹿鸣噜噜噜鸣I think the theme of the novel is more about the spirit of struggle. Through the description of the protagonist Sandiaco's tenacious struggle with sharks, this article shows a struggling outlook on life, even in the face of unconquerable nature, but people can still achieve spiritual victory. Perhaps the result is a failure, but in the process of struggle, we can see how a person can become a big husband who stands tall.

Maybe it is a story that pits man against his natural surroundings. Santiago faces several challenges from nature, with his battle with the giant marlin being the most obvious. He is, alone on the ocean, being towed along by the marlin, with the marlin in charge. Their struggle lasts two days, after which Santiago defeats the marlin and kills it.
In this novella, the sea is a symbol for the whole of nature. It is both cruel and beautiful because it takes life away, but also gives and nurtures life and man has to learn how to live with it and gain the advantages it offers.
