Use of Symbolism in The old man and the Sea

The sea plays a key role in The Old Man and the Sea, because the sea is the main source of livelihood in Santiago.It is Santiago's main workplace and a place for Santiago to show its courage and strength. The sea has an extremely valuable source of wealth. It is sometimes friendly and sometimes cruel to explorers. The part of the novel that is most dissatisfied with Santiago happens to be so cruelly dissatisfied with the sea. The description of these dissatisfaction in Hemingway's novels actually expresses his spiritual experience in a considerable sense, which is his dissatisfaction with the real world at that time. At that time, the United States was under the strong impact of McCarthyism. Everything symbolising civilisation and progress in society was destroyed and framed. The atmosphere of fear enveloped the whole American society and the American people. Hemingway borrowed the novel precisely to show dissatisfaction and courage to resist this darkness.

  The old man struggled with the marlin and the sharks on the sea. What the readers saw was a strong, patient, "hero" and "tough man" who never said die. However, the deep friendship between him and the children fully showed his kind, kind and loving "human nature". The boy is the old man's only companion in the world. The old and the young care for each other and take care of each other. The boy has been learning to fish with the old man since the age of five. Many times, they depend on each other.Therefore, I think the existence of boys highlights the "human" side of the old man .
