What is failure? Perhaps it can be said that people to do a thing, did not achieve the expected purpose, this is failure. But I think, not trying, not fighting, is really failure. A man who is always fighting close to his limits will often fail, a man who wants to explore the mysteries of nature will often fail, and a man who wants to reform society will often fail. Only those who are content to live within their limits are always "victorious." This "victor" is victorious only because his opponent has already surrendered, or he has not entered the struggle at all.

On the road of life, the word "defeat" has another meaning, that is, a person has lost the confidence to continue the struggle, lay down the weapon. Human beings yield to limits, this is the real failure. Those who have not laid down their arms, who continue to struggle, who continue to challenge the limits, have not lost. So the old man did not fail. The old man never laid down his arms, but lost them. The old man did not lose heart, so he should not be called a "failed hero".

"The Old Man and the Sea" tells the story of an old fisherman, but in this story it constructs the common destiny of mankind. I admire the old man's courage, admire his unyielding spirit of struggle, also admire Hemingway.

  In the face of never stop survival, he still want to continue to work hard, struggle and challenge, so as to get the envy of everyone again and amazing results. But many things in reality are always contrary to people's free will. In the face of the unfathom sea, the old man is far more likely to fail than he is to succeed.

  However, what is valuable is that he did not wait for death, but chose to continue to fight for honor and disgrace and survival, because the old man knew that the need of human survival determines that one's own needs can never be met, and the value lies in one's actions. Mankind will not be satisfied forever with a one-time victory.
