  Both the old man and the big fish are the main characters in this novel and, interestingly, the two are in a fate circle. The old man is fighting with his fate to be defeated by tough and lonely life as well as failure to catch no fish. And the big fish is fighting with its fate to be arrested by the old man. Both of them didn't have a victory at the end but they had achieved success in being their own hero.

  The big fish didn't fail, either. Like the old man, the big fish kept fighting with the difficulties he faced. He even showed his heroic power with the long-time swim and he didn't give up as the old man did.

  In my opinion, the old man didn't fail for the reason that he never gave up when he faced tough challenges during fishing no matter how tired he was.
