While many readers and critics have argued that The Old Man and the Sea is full of symbolism, Hemingway insisted that his work "has nothing symbolic about it. The sea is the sea, the old man is the old man, the child is the child, the fish is the fish, the shark is the shark. ...... What people say about symbolism is all nonsense." What do you think?
