The Character of Manolin

Although the character of Manolin is rarely written about, he is present at key points in the plot. Structurally, Manolin appears from the beginning of the novel; when Santiago is alone at sea, he appears again in the old man's mind; when the old man returns from fishing, Manolin is there to comfort him and keep him company. Marolin is the perfect complement to the "tough guy character". The child learns to fish with the old man from the age of five, and his personality reflects the old man's character in another way; although the child is small, he is not very childish; what he learns from the old man is not only the skill of fishing, but also the spirit of self-respect and self-improvement, and he learns to understand the hardships of life and the responsibilities of a man. The young shoulders are used to the trials and tribulations of life when they have to go out early in the morning to fish, and even though they "doze off on foot", they still say, "That's nothing, that's what a man has to do." These are powerful words that demonstrate the "Hemingway" spirit of a tough man.
