Reflections on anthropocentrism in "The Old Man and the Sea"
Anthropocentrism is the theoretic system with regard to evaluating and recognizing the objective world with man as the starting point. In "The Old Man and the Sea", reflections on anthropocentrism are indicated. On the one hand, Hemingway showed his awe of the power of nature and the view that human beings are doomed to fail through Santiago's long-term struggle with cruel sharks and his overestimation of human's ability to dominate nature. On the other hand, the author did not describe the old man as a ruthless man who would only destroy nature. On the contrary, he vividly demonstrated Santiago's respect and awe for natural words when paying attention to all creatures in the sea. In today's increasingly serious environmental damage, protecting the ecological environment has extremely important positive significance. It can arouse readers' attention to environmental issues, alert to anthropocentrism, and awaken modern people's awareness of ecological environmental protection. Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" sounded the bell for the protection of the natural ecological environment, and sounded the horn of harmony between man and nature.
