He expressed his feelings in a direct and honest way, admitting his past arrogance and saying that he was deeply in love with Elizabeth. However, Elizabeth refused his proposal. This is mainly because she was impressed by Darcy's previous behavior, and she thought that Darcy was conceited and looked down on her family and social status. Although Darcy laid down his pride for her, these past impressions made it impossible for Elizabeth to accept his proposal.
