When Jane returns to Thornfield, she finds a collapsed ruin, in stark contrast to her former fond memories of Thornfield. According to the innkeeper, Thornfield Hall had been destroyed by a fire, and Mr. Rochester had lost his sight in the fire and become a disabled man. Rochester's ex-wife also died in the fire. The news came as a great shock to Jane, but she decided to find Mr. Rochester first and then make plans. Jane's search for Mr. Rochester ends with her finding him in a bleak location, Ferndean Hall. Although Mr. Rochester was now in a very bad condition, Jane's love and care for him did not diminish. She decides to stay and take care of Mr. Rochester and spend the rest of her life with him.

There, where I had hoped to see a fine, impressive house, was nothing but a blackened heap of stones with the silence of death about it. There must have been a great fire.Mr. Rochester's mad wife who started the fire in the governess's room. In the fire the master risked his life helping all the servants out of the house, then bravely went back to save the mad woman. But because he went back to help her, he was badly injured in the fire, losing a hand and the sight of both eyes.
