Tess--Chapter 9
9. Why didn’t Claire want to be priest like his father and brothers?
美文赏欣:The longer he stayed, the more Clare liked living with these simple country people. No longer did he see them as lacking in intelligence. He realized they were no different from him: he and they were all people walking on the dusty road which ends in death. He began to like working outside. He was learning about nature and about life. He came to know the changing seasons, morning and evening, different winds, waters and mists, shade and silence, and the voices of nature. All this he had never known before.

宋清如Claire's reasons for not wanting to become a priest like his father and brothers were mainly his questioning of religious ideas, his love of outdoor life, his indifference to social customs and etiquette, and the influence of his personal character and values. He is more inclined to pursue a free, independent and authentic way of life, rather than being bound by religion and social status.

用户701590Angel Clare didn't want to follow in the footsteps of his father and brothers as a clergyman because he harbored doubts about the traditional religious doctrines and dogmas that were integral to their profession. He questioned the rigidity of the church's teachings and sought a different path for himself, one that allowed him to engage more directly with nature and the realities of life. As the passage you provided suggests, Clare's experiences living among the rural community opened his eyes to the richness and simplicity of their way of life. He came to appreciate the profound wisdom and resilience of the country people, recognizing their shared humanity and mortality. This realization led Clare to embrace a more authentic and genuine connection to the natural world, which stood in contrast to the constraints of organized religion. Clare's growing fondness for working outdoors and immersing himself in the rhythms of nature further reinforced his desire to pursue a different vocation, one that aligned with his evolving sense of self and his newfound understanding of life. Ultimately, his experiences in the countryside influenced his decision to seek a non-religious path that allowed him to explore and appreciate the beauty and complexities of the natural world.
