Don’t Judge Her——The Reaction to Pride and Prejudice
Finishing Pride and Prejudice, it is common for readers to envy the pure and innocent love of Elizabeth and Darcy, and feel sorry for the stories of other sisters in Bennet family. In addition to these girls, there is another well-educated young woman of small fortune in the book, Charlotte who attracted my attention as well as led to my thinking about the relationship between reality and love.
Charlotte’s wit and thought are in no way inferior to Elizabeth’s, which accounts for their friendship. However, she is not the darling of God. Neither does she have a beautiful appearance, nor does she own large property or a good social status. Furthermore, she has already been twenty-seven years old, which means that she has become the burden of her family in that feudal society. The author had a sympathetic tendency in writing the character, and Lizzy even thinks that Charlotte makes a choice which seems not self-esteem. However, from my perspective, it is wise and courageous of Charlotte to choose such a marriage that could offer her a comfortable home and protection, For she knows clearly that her mediocre looks have doomed her not to be easily in love. And indeed, she has never met her beloved man by the age of 27. She uses her wisdom to get the material life she wants. And meanwhile, she is soberly aware of the fact that she has to face both the question of her best friend and the torment of the arrogant of herself as well as the longing for happiness which in a sense is impossible. However, she toughs it out. “So don’t judge me,Lizzie. Don’t you dare judge me” is the most determined and courageous declaration of such a proud but unfortunate woman.
