作为审美和记忆的载体，艺术自文明诞生以来便成为社会无法分割的一部分。事实上，从古至今东西方的哲人们从未停止过关于艺术与社会的争论：艺术究竟应当在社会中承担怎样的责任？或者说，艺术在社会中的作用是否是正面的？从古希腊的柏拉图，到春秋战国时代的墨子，再到近代日本的谷崎润一郎，我们将跨越时空，一同探讨艺术的角色。

【工作坊：艺术作品赏析】

在如今这个现代艺术充斥着各个角落的时代，艺术的宗旨已经不再是单纯的“画得像”。但我们作为现代的人却并不能完全接纳并且去体验以及欣赏那些各式各样的现代艺术。今年暑假，我会带领大家一起追寻现代艺术的根源，并且让大家熟悉这个领域。我们会一起阅读二十世纪以及二十一世纪艺术批评家的文章，一起欣赏那些对于某个特定时代重要的艺术作品以及艺术家，并且亲自踏入当代艺术的领域，尝试自己去理解那些看上去匪夷所思的艺术品。

  Xunzi believes that music is happiness of human nurture and it is useful for government to use music to help people to work harder , help armies to build morale, make the society united , improve the fame of formal king and make the society to be more peaceful. Xunzi ’s opinion is look like Plate’s. Xunzi also considers that the bad music should be banned since It will lead citizens to follow the bad music to have bad behavior. Good music can also have citizens to release their emotion so that citizen no need to make a mass to show their emotion to government.

  I am not quite convinced by Xunzi, even though he has similar theory on music with Plato, believing that good music can move the goodness in people's hearts, but he doesn't give enough examples on how. He explains the manner in which former kings created music, but I'd rather believe that they created the music, Ya and Song, to consolidate their reign, because no one has the intelligence to decide what is the right kind of music.

  Xunzi believed that music is "joy", and contains all human dispositions in it. According to xunzi, good music (music that is not excessive) can provoke the good side of humanity, while bad music the evil side. Good music also makes ruler and ministers respectful, father and sons affectionate, and elders and the youth cooperative. Xunzi also argues that solemn and sacred music unites the people, strengthens the military and prevents enemies from attacking the city, thereby allowing citizens a peaceful, prosperous life. Unlike Plato who simply bans all bad music, Xunzi seems to be more open minded as he only discards the "excessive" ones. Both Plato and Xunzi use music to rear people...

  In the art theory of xunzi,there are two key points:the union and the education.Xunzi,who disagreed with Mozi,thought that music will definitely have great and significant meanings to the country.because music is joy,and joy is the disposition of human beings,but this kind of emotion will accumulate inside our body ,and if we can not control it well,it will turns into evil.So the former kings will and did use the melody to help people to release the joy inside them.And the music will make the royal families,the families and the farmers more harmony,because he think the music can purify the minds of human,and that is the second point about the music-education,with being exposed to the good music,the same as what plato said,the farmers will know what is better,what is the unbeautiful things,and then the will have better cooperation and relationship ,moreover will benefit the development of the country,finally makes both the people and king happy.

  Mozi believed that music should be banned if it was for the benefit of the people.Music wastes a lot of human resources and resources in the country.The interests of the people will be reduced.Mozi is a utilitarian and pragmatist.He felt that if something had practical significance and visible benefits, it would have meaning.He completely abandoned the cultivation of inner moral character and spiritual enjoyment.He put the material richness in the first place.This reminds me of Mozi and Confucius'attitudes toward sacrificial rites.Confucius did not believe in gods, but he thought sacrificial rites were necessary.Mozi believed in the existence of gods, but he thought sacrificial rites were not needed.The two seem contradictory, but in fact they are understandable.Confucius offered sacrifices to the ancestors in order to cultivate people's morality.Mozi believes in God because God is useful.God can make people not easy to do bad things.There is no need for sacrifices because sacrifices are useless and waste people's resources.

  Mozi has very similar tendency or to say attitude about the music and the musical things after i did the reading of it.Because he think that the music is harmful thing towards the people or the “citizen”.The main reason is about two aspects:the instrument and the music itself.First the instrument will cost a lot of money to construct or build,and this money should be used to improve the people’s life or the defense or the development.And on the other hand the music will do harm to the people,the farmers,to make them feel lazy and do not do their ow jobs.So thats ,kind of, like the plato’s perspective.
