Absorb essence
郭泽熙
Gu Hongming, in my opinion , may be the most keep and most rebel great scholar in that time. The reason why I think that Although he had been instructed with advanced western education, he was a monarchist who is very firm, and held a belief that the only way to save China is coming back. So, why I think he was the most rebel scholar? Because when almost every great scholar advocated democracy as the way to save China, he still believed that the feudal system was the best way to manage a country.
Is that means all of his ideas are rotten, backward, and useless? The answer is that we should absorb what is good and reject what is bad. That is what I feel after reading <<The spirit of the Chinese people>>.
The most infrequent part of this book I think is the part of describing the reason why Chinese did not need lineal religion. In a way, I think that it proves the belief of atheist—We do not need god to push us to be a good man, we have our own beliefs to remind us to be a good man, which is much more actual and independent. (I don’t mean that religion isn’t good. What I mean is that the book gives the way to control ourselves without “God”)
Moreover, the book talks about the fake Sinologist, which is also very profound and aculeate. If someone really want to know about the true Chinese culture , he has to do a lot of work rather than simply publish a shallow paper with some untenable arguments. So, in that case ,the people who really adequately understand China are must be Chinese. It shows the confidence of the writer and that China has broad and profound culture. And , its true that the book also has a large amount of not quite correct points. Such as the traditional view of woman, the wrong thinking about the origin of war, the highbrow illusion of feudal system and so on. But when we go back on that time of China , we will find that some ideas of the book was still ahead of time though some of them wasn’t right.
When it comes to what I have learned from this book (The Spirit of the Chinese people),For the content , I understand a new explanation of why Chinese do not need religion to save and control themselves at that time , know the vivid description of the form of what is the politics in western countries and something I think is very fresh and meaningful. For the feeling after I read this, I think when we get touch with new things, we need to absorb what is good and reject what is bad. Yes ,some force majeure factors will not allow us to do so, but everything comes from each try. Do not accept or reject all of something. That’s all I want to say.
