savor the Chinese spirit
宿佳佳
Should we think carefully about what the Chinese spirit is?The question seems simple, but it's hard to answer.Because the word "spirit" is too extensive. In this book, Gu Hongming expounds the spirit of the Chinese people, the Chinese women, the Chinese language and so on, and narrates the spirit of the Chinese people in his mind. First of all, the author thinks that the most general word of Chinese spirit is the gentle.Real Chinese people have a calm, sober and practical spirit.Perhaps the real Chinese are vulgar, but there is no mean in vulgarity.Maybe it's mean, but there's no arrogance in it.Maybe it's smooth, but there's no viciousness in it.The general feeling of Chinese people is gentleness and elegance. The reason is that in China, children are taught to be good at first.
Many countries in the world believe that people should have some kind of religious belief, but Chinese people haven't.The author believes that this is because there is Confucianism in China, and Confucianism can replace religion.Foreign countries maintain national stability by law and army, while China relies on people's hearts and morals.
In my opinion, the "evil nature" theory of Europeans and Americans seems to be more suitable for modern China, because they think that human nature is evil, so foreigners teach their children how to do is good, they use the law to maintain order. But in the traditional Chinese concept, "human nature is good", as if children can not do bad things. So many parents don't teach their children what to do when they are young, because they think that children are kind.
Next, the author talks about Chinese women. He believed that Chinese women should follow three principles and four virtues and not live for themselves.Their duty is to be a good daughter, wife and mother. What is more incomprehensible is that the author believes that the ancient concubines were due to the selflessness of Chinese women…But I think these are all ridiculous in modern times. Now we are focusing on equality between men and women. Everyone should live for himself, contribute to the world, and be himself is the most important thing.
Language is the carrier of a nation's cultural heritage, which contains the spirit and characteristics of a nation. The author believes that Chinese is a language of the mind, and the most important thing in learning Chinese is to keep a childlike heart. Chinese can use simple language to depict gorgeous pictures and express sincere feelings, which are beyond the reach of other languages.
From the whole book we can see that Gu Hongming is a faithful follower of Confucianism and a faithful supporter of feudalism.Through the comparative analysis of Eastern and Western cultures, this book shows that the real Chinese people are those who have a childlike mind but live a rational adult life.
Finally, a paragraph in the book is used as a summary: the Chinese spirit is the perfect combination of soul and thought, and the tranquil and peaceful mentality enables the Chinese to see through the essence of things, which is imaginative reason. The Chinese spirit is a spirit of perpetual youth and immortality of a nation. The immortal secret is the perfect harmony of Chinese mind and reason.
