Simplicity and kindness coexist
"To understand the real Chinese and Chinese civilization, that person must be deep, broad and simple", because "the Chinese character and the three characteristics of Chinese civilization, is deep, broad and simple... ". This is the unique opinion of the author gu hongming in the book.
I like the author of this book very much. Gu hongming, known as the "geeky hero in the late qing dynasty", has a good command of many languages and is the first person in China to master western science, language and Oriental sinology in the qing dynasty. He was keen on propagating Oriental culture and spirit to westerners, and had a great influence on them. Westerners once spread a saying: when you go to China, you can't ignore the three halls, but not gu hongming.
The book is permeated with the essence of his thoughts, "the first Chinese spirit is gentleness, gentleness is not a natural weakness, nor is it a fragile submission, but it is not tough, harsh, rude and violent. He praised the gentlemanly spirit of the Chinese people.
Gu argues that in order to evaluate a civilization, we must look at what kind of people it can produce, what kind of men and women it can produce. The Chinese character and the three major characteristics of Chinese civilization are "profound, broad and simple", in addition to "sensitive". From this unique perspective, gu hongming contrasts Chinese with americans, British, germans and French, highlighting the characteristics of Chinese people. The English are deep and simple, but not grand; German broad, deep, and not simple; The French have no German natural deep, not as American broad-minded and the British heart simple, but have the three national lack of sensitivity; Only the Chinese people have all these four excellent spiritual qualities."
I once heard a foreign friend say that the longer you live in Japan as a foreigner, the more you hate the Japanese. On the contrary, the longer you live in China, the more you like Chinese people. This foreign friend has lived in Japan and China for a long time. The contrast between the Japanese and the Chinese is enough to show the author's confidence in his countrymen."
The development of the Chinese is not so much hindered as a nation that never grows old," a nation that "possesses the secret of eternal youth." This nation "lives a spiritual life like a child". "We have pinned Mr. Gu hongming's hope for the immortality of the Chinese nation
....... After reading the spirit of the Chinese people, my soul was washed and inspired. It told me not to deny the tradition rashly, nor to deny western learning rashly. No matter what color of people, should be with a broad mind, deep thinking, to understand each other, mutual tolerance.
I love this book because of its author and its ideas. I also recommend more people to read this book.Maybe you'll get caught up in it by the mystery and the beauty of words.
