The reviews of “The spirit of the Chinese people”
The book “The spirit of the Chinese people” makes me think profoundly. I am deeply moved by the author’s courage to express his own opinions on current politics and justify our Chinese culture even if I am very sorry that I cannot agree with some of his opinions which is outdated.
There is no denying that it is very respectable of him to do this since China was a weak country at that time. As a polyglot Chinese scholar, he has the ability to make his voice heard in the world, which is hard to be reach by many other people. So it was his duty, to some extent, to write a book that defended the Chinese and the the spirit of the Chinese people. Nevertheless, we cannot deny his personal greatness, for he has unhesitatingly raised the banner of national rejuvenation, whether it is his duty or not. As you can imagine, there may be plenty of international opposition to this, but he clearly does not care about them. At the same time, the story about his not cutting braids also shows his persistence and stubbornness. Whether the thing itself is correct or not, the firmness of his inner conviction is really admirable. So even though I don't agree with some of his views, he is still a man whom I respect very much.
As for the contents of the book, I have to admit that many of them are really out of date in modern society, such as the requirements for women and the loyalty to the emperor in the old days. We'd better just read about them objectively. There is no doubt about the criticism of our predecessors. We can understand that they are the artifacts of the author's time, but there is no need to follow them. We should not hesitate to discard these outdated views. But there is still something worthy of learning. For example, the description of Chinese language in the book that Chinese is a language about heart inspires us to feel our language more through our own hearts, so as to gain a deeper understanding of our own language. Also, he says Chinese people are like children with adult reason. Admittedly, we are not always as idealistic as the Chinese he describes. But his description gives us a way forward. So we can work towards it and think about who we should be. There is no doubt that we should try to be like a child but have the adult reason. We have to try to bring back our curiosity, our innocence, our sensibility, our passion and the other qualities of children. Although we may have lost them now, I believe we have the ability to get them back because our ancestors also had the ability to do so.
All in all, this book gives us an insight into the real spirit of Chinese people, from which we get a chance to know more about our ancestor, which inspires us to follow their steps in our future life.
