My View After Reading

陆海鹏
After reading the book, obtained some points from it, I do not know whether it is right or not, but  ask for advice from you.
If we really want to grasp the essence of this book, I think that the author's writing intentions will be clear and easy to understand in connection with Mr. Gu's background of the times.
In the late Qing Dynasty, the Chinese nation was being bullied by powers. The Western world had a great prejudice against Chinese culture. The author wrote this book when European countries were suffering from World War I. In this regard, Mr. Hu seized this opportunity and, while commenting on the fuse of World War I and the strategy of truce, gradually unveiled the mysterious veil of Chinese civilization.
In the process of reading this book, what I can feel most is Mr. Wang's great respect for Chinese culture. He is good at using repetitive rhetoric to emphasize the importance of Confucianism to Chinese civilization and even to the whole world. In order to further illustrate how profound Confucianism is, Mr. Zhang made a comparison between Western religious beliefs and Eastern Confucian civilization. At the same time, he explained the personality characteristics of people under different cultural domes (American, British, German and French), which not only highlighted the broad and profound Chinese civilization, but also highlighted the excellent spiritual characteristics of Chinese deep, broad, simple and delicacy. The origin of World War I was also partially related to the irrational and incomplete ideological system of the West. At the end of the book, the author points out that earnest study of Confucian civilization is the basis for Westerners to save their own civilization. In words and sentences, we can see the importance of Chinese civilization.
Of course, limited to the author's social structure and background, some of the author's views have not been accepted by me. For example, in the chapter of "Chinese Women", when Mr. Gu clarified the reasons for the emergence of "concubinage", he only believed that it was women's affirmation of their duties, in other words, their sacrifice to themselves. In my opinion, this is not entirely correct. Some maids, perhaps out of the family dilemma, may be the favor of men and unable to resist, perhaps out of their own inner lust and willingness to be subordinate. In addition, there are a lot of over-absolute views in the book, but as I said - in the light of practical background, only by doing so, the good intentions of Mr. A. are reasonable.
Anyway, as a classic work which reveals the spiritual life of Chinese people and elucidates the eternal value of Chinese traditional culture in the early stage, it should be appreciated seriously by contemporary Chinese people all ages today.
