At first, I read the spirit of the Chinese people, and like some people, I found some of the ideas of the author Mr. Gu Hongming hard to accept. For example, he advocated royalism, foot binding and concubinage. Like most people, I also found some of Mr. Gu's behaviors difficult to understand, and felt that he was pedantic and stubborn. However, I especially admired Mr. Gu Hongming. He was patriotic and worked hard to learn Chinese and Chinese spiritual culture after returning to China. Finally,  the maverick " old monster"– Mr. Gu Hongming, interpreted the spirit of the Chinese people from all aspects.

What I admire is Mr. Gu Hongming's comprehensive interpretation of the Chinese people's spiritual character. The Chinese people may have many shortcomings, such as vulgarity, ugliness, vulgarity, ignorance, cunning, but the Chinese people are not weak, rude, absurd, evil or terrible. On the contrary, they are lovely. The flawed beauty may be more pleasing, yearning and pursuing than perfection. Mr. Wang said that the Chinese are gentlemen, and I agree with him very much. although in the feudal old society, various etiquette systems imprisoned people's thoughts and behaviors, to a certain extent, the spirit of the Chinese gentleman could be passed down in the process of reproduction. the Chinese are very kind and have strong sympathy and empathy. these two kinds of mentality can coexist and depend on each other.

Secondly, the Chinese language, the Chinese people communicate with heart, just like people who are proficient in languages of other countries ( except Chinese ) will still have difficulty in learning Chinese, not because of his lack of ability or talent, but because he will use his usual skills to learn and dissect Chinese, ignoring the most important factor - comprehension, which is to feel with heart. The Chinese language is shaped by various factors, such as culture, history, region, Many factors, such as human beings, have continuously perfected and beautified Chinese and finally formed a unique language, transforming language into tangible and intangible, and into spiritual communication. This is also one of the reasons why Chinese culture is difficult to be understood and understood by the world. Even our Chinese cannot interpret all our own cultures.

Finally, it is also a very important part. Religious beliefs, looking at the history of religious development in the history of European civilization and comparing with Chinese academic, will find similarities. They will all evolve with the development of society. They will jointly find conflicts between philosophy and beliefs. But I think the wisdom of Chinese civilization is to reconcile and resolve this conflict. They exist together, that is, Confucianism in China. This is also difficult to achieve in Europe now, because religion satisfies people's hearts, philosophy enriches people's minds, and both cannot exist at the same time.

After reading this book, the spirit of the Chinese people is more vivid in Mr. Gu Hongming's works. Although this book is an interpretation of the spirit of the Chinese people in that era, it is worth learning today. We should take its essence and discard its dross.
