learning and reflecting
The book is divided into eight main parts. From the Chinese spirit, Chinese women, language, foreign scholars, sinologists, sinology, and the influence and persuasion of these perspectives respectively to discuss their own point of view.Written during the first world war at the beginning of last century, when European civilization was in crisis, Lao gu
wanted to use his views on Chinese spirit and culture to show a way out for Europe and the world in wartime. The first
half of the book devotes a large amount of ink to the introduction of Chinese people's spirit and civilization. In the
following part, I will make a comparison with China through the analysis of foreign scholars, translations and foreign
cultures. The appendix can be regarded as a summary of all the previous introduction and argumentation and the final
point of view and the purpose of writing the book.
The Chinese do not need to believe in religious conclusions because they have higher aspirations. The reason for
Chinese people's gentleness has something to do with their environment. Chinese people's "human nature is good" is
opposite to the "human nature is bad" spread by foreign countries. Therefore, what kind of civilization produces what
kind of people. The reason why foreigners believe in the religion of god is precisely because he has no support in his
heart, and he is dissatisfied with and evades all kinds of phenomena in real life.
Chinese worship of ancestors is not based on yearning for future life, but on belief in national immortality. The
sentence here is very similar to the reflection of the film COCO, "if there is no hope, at least there is a great possibility
to see you again. To be remembered is to be remembered, and to be remembered is to be immortal. When a person
does not exist in anyone's mind, is the real sense of death and the end of life, then he is really disappeared. The same
is true of a nation's civilization and spirit. Only when they are remembered by the people of their own nation can they
achieve immortality. Because of immortality, so worship; Because of worship, so immortal. This is the immortality of man
and even of a nation.
Chinese women's marriage is not a happy outcome of love. As early as long ago, there is a similar marriage parents make decisions. Therefore, a woman does not marry necessarily for love, but for her duty. Her duty is to be loyal even selfless to her husband. And this selfless religion is the Chinese gentleman's religion. The responsibility of men is to provide protection for women and children and make contributions to society and the country. In this chapter, Mr. Koo also expressed his views on concubines. Concubinage may be considered immoral by most people, but it actually provides women with man's protection. And it is because men love their wives so much that they allow concubinage. Wives and concubines are also responsible for maintaining family harmony and stability. Chinese women's elegant and submissive qualities make their influence in Chinese history and even civilization not to be underestimated.
Generally speaking, Chinese language is neither difficult nor easy. No, because the language in Chinese works is very
simple and easy to understand. It's difficult because he has to learn by heart. To understand a word, one must
understand its source and even its background. The difficulty of Chinese language lies in its depth, in the fact that
simple words contain profound emotions. Therefore, Chinese language is a poetic language. There are not many truly
educated people, and most of what we see now are only half-educated people who find the Chinese language difficult.
Mr Koo offered to learn Chinese "like a child". Because of heart. Why do Chinese people have a good memory? It's also
about the heart.
The broadness, simplicity, depth and sensitivity of the Chinese people, their sincerity and justice, and their adherence
to morality have nurtured generations of people today.
At the end of the article is the true purpose of Mr. Gu's writing. The fear of the common people led to the weak
power of the ruling class and forced obedience. The worship of the British mob and the German power led to the
collapse of European civilization. Mr Koo suggested that a man of true trust should be elected to make peace instead
of war. As the Chinese academic said, "it should start from the correct management of the country; The administration
of the state begins with the administration of the family; The management of the family begins with the cultivation of
the individual. Europeans must realize this if they want to save their country and civilization.
Lao gu's affirmation and worship of the Chinese spirit can be seen through his words. Make me open my eyes, also
let me reflect, as a semi-educated should do, correct attitude. But some of his views run counter to modern socialist
values. For example, attitudes towards concubinage and awareness of the responsibilities of Chinese women. Lao gu is
too absolute in some dialectical aspects, which is worth reflecting on.
Born to the Chinese people, will remember the Chinese spirit, the nation immortal.
