Feeling after Reading
The Spirit of Chinese People is a book written by Hongming Gu. Before reading, I just thougth he was a crazy man. But as I read the book little by little, something had changed.
As a Chinese whose stepmother is a western lady, he received westernization education since childhood. So that his knowledge of China is only after a trip to various European colleges. He earned 13 doctorates in his lifetime, but chose to become a champion of Chinese civilization. He read back the English newspapers and joeked at the British, saying that the Americans had no culture. He was the first to translate the analects of Confucius and the doctrine of the mean into English and German. Served as an interpreter for envoys of six countries. With a well-spoken tongue, he talked about Confucianism to Japanese prime minister ITO, wrote letters to literary master Leo Tolstoy, discussed the world culture and political situation, and was called "the most honorable Chinese" by Indian Mahatma Gandhi...
Hongming Gu should be written down in history.
In Gu's the Spirit of Chinese People, his almost extreme views caused many Chinese people's incomprehension. However, under the historical condition in which almost totally repudiated Oriental culture, a real balance could be achieved only by resisting one extreme trend of thought with the other extreme.
In The May 4th movement, people blindly praised western culture, regarded traditional Chinese culture as scum, decadent and backward, and advocated the comprehensive introduction of western culture. In this situation, it is understandable and admirable that Gu has given an extremely supportive voice to Chinese culture.
The book mainly introduce what's Chinese people and try to try to use Chinese ideas to solve problems. Although this book has some unobjective views, it is due to the limitations of the times. We should also read these predecessors who do not conform to our views and make our own thinking.
