Why great?
Camille987
As F.Stott Fitzgerald said in his book’s direction,
Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her;
If you can bounce high, bounce for her too,
Till she cry “Lover , gold hatted , high-bouncing lover,
I must have you!”
Daisy is a typical “Gold digger”. But why the GREAT Gatesby is great?And why did Haruki Murakami say the book is so great that he is afraid that he can’t transfer it into Japanese well when he was young ? Frankly speaking , I’m afraid I can’t taste the beauty of this book at first. Nonetheless ,my feelings of this book changed as I learnt more context of this book and its author.
Gatesby’s story is just like author’s own life experience. In author’s life, Ginevra King is Daisy. After author’s death at the age of forty-four ,his daughter found a document named “Absolutely Privacy” and the privacy is the letters with Ginevra King. In her wealthy family, only the most beautiful girl could be named Ginevra .In 1915, eighteen-year-old Fitzgerald met sixteen-year-old Ginevra .They fell in love with each other at their first sight. As Ginevra’s father said, poor boys shouldn’t think of marrying rich girls. So however deep love they had, they could only leave it in the heart. To tell the truth, if Ginevra’s love is faithful, she would definitely marry him. Like Gatesby in the book, Fitzgerald got rich when his book The Side of Paradise was published.He hold a great number of parties like Gatesby, he also want Ginevra would join his party one day. But she never join his party and never met him even on his funeral. The Great Gatesby is just like an autobiography of Fitzgerald.
In spite of the fiction, sentences in this novel has impressed me a lot.“But I didn’t call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone—he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock.”Sentences and fictions bring Gatesby into life.It describes a spoony Gatesby missing his love, Daisy. In addition ,the green light appear again at the end of the novel. From where I stand , the green light is the symbol of not only his love or his desire ,but also his idea. Five years ago, he chased the girl who can’t marry him because of his status and his wealth. But Daisy is just a normal girl who like money.She confused and she can’t tell which one she loves. At this point ,we could say Gatesby’s dream is nonsence. To be noted, Gatesby has a virtue that most of us don’t have. It is going after our dreams.
