This article from the real Chinese, Chinese etiquette, Chinese language to explain the spirit of Chinese civilization and reveal its value. The author argues that Chinese civilization is the only way to save Europe, which I do not quite agree with. Because every civilization has its reason of existence and law of development. He pointed out that the real Chinaman is a person with the head of a grown—up man and the heart of a child. The Chinese spirit, therefore, is a spirit of perpetual youth, the spirit of national immortality. This is a good illustration of the great wisdom of the Chinese people, who are mature yet innocent and have great wisdom.
The author has a very original view of religion, he said:“ Presence of the threatening forces of Nature and the cruel merciless passions of their fellowmen and the mystery and terror which these inspire, religion gives to the mass of mankind a refuge—a refuge in which they can find a sense of security; and that refuge is a belief in some supernatural Being or beings who have absolute power and control over those forces which threaten them.”
The author expounds the ideal female image, lifestyle and values of Chinese women, and compares Chinese women with western ideal women. The author thinks that the ideal female image of Chinese people is housewife, which conforms to the three concord and four virtues ,That is to say, when a woman is unmarried, she is to live for her father ; when married, she is to live for her husband ; and, as a widow, she is to live for her children . In fact, the chief end of a woman in China is not to live for herself, or for society; not to be a reformer or to be president of the woman' s natural feet Society; not to live even as a saint or to do good to the world; the chief end of a woman in China is to live as a good daughter, a good wife and a good mother.” But Chinese women never live by themselves, which is a tragedy. Although the author describes it as noble and praises its selfless dedication, it is actually a disguised "flattery", which is to shackle Chinese women to meet men's authority and desire. As he wrote : it is the selflessness of the wife in China, her sense of duty, the duty of self-sacrifice which allows a man in China to have handmaids or concubines.” This is a man's excuse and bullshit.
It is undeniable that gu hong ming's the spirit of the Chinese people is imbued with his love for China and the Chinese people, and is full of his respect and admiration for the profound Chinese culture. Although in some thoughts it bears the imprint of the old times, it is also out of touch with The Times. As a contemporary Chinese youth, what kind of spirit and attitude should we adopt to life and society? What we need to learn is the law of the gentleman that the author wrote about in the book, which is to understand propriety, righteousness and shame, sympathy and intelligence.
