Recently, I finished reading gu hongming's the spirit of Chinese people in fragmentary time. The content of the book made me deeply understand the profound Chinese culture and the true Chinese spirit.
The author of this book, Mr. Gu hongming, learned both Chinese and western knowledge and was known as "a strange man in the late qing dynasty". He was the first person in China to master western science, language and Oriental sinology in the qing dynasty. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a saying among westerners that we could not go to China without seeing the Forbidden City. It shows his influence in the society at that time.
Written entirely in English and published in 1915, gu hongming defended the dignity of Chinese culture with his own pen and changed some westerners' prejudice against China. And this is written in the beginning of last century during the first world war, when European civilization was in crisis, gu's purpose was obvious, to point out a way out for the crisis-hit Europe and even the whole world civilization. The purpose is to try to explain the spirit of Chinese civilization and reveal its value. Although I personally think there are some extremes in some thoughts, just as what li xu said, under the historical condition where gu hongming almost completely negates Oriental culture, a kind of extreme ideological trend may only be resisted with another extreme to achieve a real balance.
In this book, I read the first three parts: real Chinese, Chinese women, Chinese language. Between the lines is revealed as a Chinese national pride, a lot of spirit is indeed our people have. However, some of Mr. Gu's explanations were biased. However, at that time, Mr. Gu played an indispensable role in promoting Oriental civilization. The Chinese expressed and described in this book is that he lives a life with the rationality of adults but with the mind of children. The real Chinese have adult brains and child hearts. Therefore, the Chinese spirit is the spirit of eternal youth, is the national immortal spirit. What is the secret of immortality? Unspeakable refinement: a combination of understanding and common sense. What is the law of justice? The law of justice is truth, faithfulness and loyalty. Now in China, there is no need for natural forces to protect themselves, justice and controversy are higher than natural forces, and moral obligation is something that must be obeyed.
However, there are some points in the book that I do not agree with. For example, concubinage and the maintenance of "three inch gold lotus." But the gist of the book is worth learning from.
What is the spirit of the Chinese people? That's not an easy answer. This book explains the Chinese spirit through "Chinese spirit", "Chinese woman", "Chinese language", "John in China", "a great Sinologist" and "sinology". Through many examples and comparisons, Lao gu deeply analyzed the Chinese spirit. I think Chinese modesty is the most valuable and needs to be continued. Chinese spirit should "take the essence and discard the dross", and learn from the good points of others. Only in this way can the Chinese nation carry forward and never be bullied by the eight-power allied forces during their aggression against China. As a Chinese in the new era, I think we should learn from the useful parts of the book and try to be a deep, broad, simple and sensitive person.
