As mentioned in the preface, the purpose of this book is to explain the spirit of Chinese civilization and reveal its value. And the evaluation criteria are also thought-provoking, not science and technology, not urban development, not economic development, not cultural measurement, but from the human nature. And the essence of human beings should be viewed from the perspective of human language, which is equivalent to the view of the world and civilization, providing a new perspective and a new vision.

Attitudes to the book have been as mixed as they have been to Gu himself. Gu, himself a byword for legend, spoke nine languages and earned 13 doctorates. Today we can cast aside the class limitations of our time and see that, perhaps most important for China at the time, Gu gave the nation the confidence it never had and the chance to stand tall. If you look at it, you can see that China was living in a time when everyone looked down upon the Chinese people. It is really admirable that a man who could swear at foreigners and listen to them with his own eloquence. Therefore, from the perspective of promoting cultural confidence, spreading Chinese culture and making Chinese voice, he really has great reference significance.

We all know that some of the Gu’s viewpoints are outdated. Some even seems ridiculous today. Many things he said are logically untenable. But his conceited attitude between the lines also makes you feel that you should not consider these words from the logical aspect. Instead, you should hold the same attitude towards Li Bai, with nothing but respect.

As to the writing skills, his English was good, but it was so verbose that he had to go around in circles several times to finish a sentence, which made him look like a stuttering old gentleman in a private school (an old form of studying in ancient China).

There is no denying that the spirit of the Chinese people that Gu emphasized is indeed yearned for and missed. In his opinion, due to the western theory of sexual evil, and then fear of god and law, so the need for external force to discipline. Spending a large amount of money to support the idle class (such as priests, military police, etc.) is not only a problem, but also causes a strong constraint on people themselves, which in turn promotes people to go to extremes and forms militarism when extended to the state machine. This is undoubtedly a major reason why the great powers at the beginning of the 20th century covet China. China, on the other hand, has a good citizen's religion, namely self-restraint of moral sense, which then extends to its highest duty, namely the duty of loyalty, selfless and absolute, which naturally also includes the three cardinal principles and the five permanent principles. So the Chinese live a life of mind and a real Chinese person has both the mind of an adult and the mind of a child. So the Chinese spirit is the spirit of eternal youth, is the national immortal spirit.
