By contrasting with the Americans, the French and the Japanese, the book conveys the three characteristics that the Chinese have at the same time: deep, broad and simple. In that era when the nation was backward and wars were raging, the publication of this book can undoubtedly switch foreigners' prejudices against the Chinese to a certain extent and safeguard the national self-esteem.
The author asserted, what should be valued in a civilization must see it"can produce what kind of individuals, what kind of men and women". He criticized those who were called"the Chinese Civilization Research Authorities"did not really realize Chinese and Chinese Language. He pointed out that to recognize the real Chinese and the Chinese civilization, the person must be deep and simple for the Chinese character and Chinese civilization had three big characteristics, which are deep, profound and simple, in addition to sensitive. Because of these, said the writer, Chinese folks left the impression of the kind, sort of unspeakable goodness. He wrote,"Chinese live a life like kids--a kind of spiritual life."
In the impoverished days more than a hundred years ago, when most Chinese envied the happy and wealthy life in the west but lost the love for our motherland, a scholar at the end of Qing dynasty deeply analyzed the unique spiritual temperament of Chinese individuals with strong national pride. Currently, more than a century later, when China is at a critical moment when the Communist Party is leading us to build a well-off society in an all-round way and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, reading classic works is also of vital significance for youngsters. By further comprehending the connotation of the Chinese national spirit, we will enhance our national self-confidence, forge ahead courageously on the road of reform and opening up, write a grand chapter of socialist modern China and draw a magnificent blueprint for the country in the future.
The reason why classics become classics is that they can withstand the elutriation of time and shine forever. As successors to the socialist construction in the new era, it's our duty to read more classical works, appreciate the author's opinions through speaking with masters, enrich our knowledge and experience, and contribute our strength to the socialist modernization drive.
