Million Pounds
Shirleen
The 1,000,000 Pound Bank-Note is a short story by American writer Mark Twain, published in 1893. It tells an adventure of a poor American boy Henry Adams in London. Two rich brothers in London bet that they would lend Henry an unredeemable million to see how it turned out in a month. Instead of starving or being arrested, Henry became rich and won the heart of a beautiful young lady.
In this book, just parts of this story is shown: After the shipwreck, Henry fled to London. Penniless, he tried to pick up the pear on the ground because he was hungry. At this time, he was chosen by two old rich brothers to become the protagonist of their bet. Because of his shabby clothes, he was ignored and satirized at first when he ate in restaurants and bought clothes in clothing stores. But after displaying the one million dollar bill, he received warm receptions.
This story uses slightly exaggerated artistic techniques to reproduce the satire and humor in the master's novel, revealing the worship of money in British society at the beginning of the 20th century.
