In the era where religion constituted an enormous part of one's life, people naturally looked to priests——the representatives of God——for guidance. Christianity deprived the Europeans of their legal opportunity to enjoy life, so war became the sole let-out, issuing the plundering, burning, destroying, licenses, etc. Faith and supertition goes hand in hand. The 17th and 18th century are the centuries of Enlightenment which take reason and science as its feature, thus challenging the authority of the Church. In the 19th century, state took place of the Church to become the unquestionable authority. In the 20 th century, various associations of classes and groups ensured more power for the people and the power of the states diminished.

In the Middle Age as well as the Religious War, most of Europeans fought for him who paid the best. They fought for interests and gains. Only a few staunch believers fought for their religion. However, in the Middle Ages, the sham virtue had not yet been invented. In the Religious War, people used the name of God to justify their own petty interests.

The author proposed that in the Middle Age, the crusaders fought Turks in defence of Christianity instead of for money. Not until about 100 years ago did soldier fight on the side and in the interest of him who offered the best salary. However, according to some documentaries that I watched, those crusaders, on sacking a city or a village, they started plundering, burning, pillaging and raping, which were altogether contrast to the doctrine/ dictated by Christianity. Wars are usually dominated by men. Do men value their honor more than their life? For me, I would rather the man I love to live rather than die for honor.

Material goods such as position and possession can not entice a man to embrace his death, but intangible, romantic and lofty ideals suffice for a man's to throw his mortal years to a dice. What are these intangible, romantic and lofty ideals? Love, honor, fatherland, fame for eternity, rememberance for eternity. Powerful men want glory, honor and a position in history. They need the masses to sacrifice their lives in defence of their honor. How can a man be persuaded to render this kind of service unless he's convinced that the service he will render is a heroic one?
