颓废中的觉醒
Pound had said of the Dubliners: "I can put down a good French novel and pick up a novel by Mr. Joyce without feeling as if I had been deceived." However, the outstanding work did not get its first edition until 10 years later, in 1914, when it was rejected by 22 publishers. Why? Because a work showing the decadent temperament of Dubliners must not be liked by the Irish at that time. But not being accepted by the public could not shake Joyce's determination to expose all this. Because this is just like scraping bones to cure wounds. Carrion must be removed to regain vitality. Joyce did so, and so did Mr. Lu Xun, who left a profound influence in the history of modern Chinese literature. Mr. Lu Xun felt deeply about China's conservatism and stubbornness, "when the whip of creation does not reach the backbone of China, China will always be such a China and will never change a hair on its own." Borrowing the words of Mr. N in "the Story of hair”, he described his worries about the future of Chinese people. Similar to the lifeless Irish society at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the Chinese people of the same period were also insensitive and content with the status quo, did not care about the world, have no idea of saving their own destiny, and have no understanding of human value. except that the Irish people at that time were mainly oppressed by two forces, that is, Catholicism and British colonial rule, while China suffered the bitter fruit of feudal rule. Some things we can't see doesn't mean they don't exist. The Dubliners and the Scream hit directly at our psychology of trying to present a false appearance of peace and prosperity. The two author wanted to break out in silence instead of dying in silence. They forced us to look directly at the things that we dared not to face and wish to keep a short period of peace through closed sight and hearing. So we have only two choices, either to die sober and painful, or to keep struggling, and finally break the cocoon into a butterfly and get a new life. The immortal images created by Mr. Lu Xun, such as madman, Kong Yiji and A Q, have been polished over time, and they can still make all modern people reflect deeply in today's society. At the same time, the cliff endings in Dubliners really leave a thousand Hamlets in the hearts of a thousand readers. When we continue to think about the disillusionment and epiphany of these small potatoes in the blank created by this kind of ending, we will deepen our understanding of ourselves, slowly learn to reconcile with the bitterness and misfortune of life, and save ourselves from confusion.
The two honorable gentlemen, one stands in the West and the other in the East. Even if they represent different literary schools, they both used a pen as a blade to cut through the ignorance of the people and help the people awaken. Their worries about the country and the people are the same.
