This book guides us to think about a question, what should universities
cultivate students, and what should students do when they go to
university Newman believed that university, as a place of education,
should provide students with a platform for free learning and
communication, expand the scope of subject teaching, and let students
receive free education. More similar to what we now call compound
talents, or generalists. For this point I agree, because only by playing
the horizon to see enough, you have more potential to do better in the
field. For example, in the comparison between business and engineering,
some people may think that engineering is less practical than business,
and some people think that engineering contributes more, but in fact,
business and engineering complement each other. Could Jobs have achieved
what he did simply by being able to write code? Or could Jobs have
achieved what he did without skill and creativity just by being in
business? The short board effect is very significant. I personally think
that a person is not required to know anything, but at least ask
yourself not to have too many shortcomings as far as possible. Chinese
universities attach great importance to the acquisition of specialized
subjects, and lack a strong humanistic general education as the
foundation. In addition to professional courses, there are many
interdisciplinary elective courses in the first and second years, but
for most students, it is just coping with water classes. In fact, no
matter what major should involve the knowledge of various disciplines,
at least can give us a broader vision to study and life. There is
wholeness in knowledge, and a single discipline is part of a whole. Too
much emphasis on one subject is unfair to the others. Our school is a
comprehensive university, which gives us a lot of opportunities to
develop skills outside the major, such as literary, nuclear and so on. I
think students should consciously improve themselves through these
lessons. About the practicability of teaching. Many people think that
studying calculus is just a way of showing you what higher education is,
and that it won't be much use in the future. Of course, some people say
that these basic subjects are very important. What is useful and what is
not? "What is useful brings profit, and what is free is for
enjoyment." Income means income that can be obtained, and enjoyment
means that it brings no result other than use." This sentence in
the book makes me feel very useful, perhaps just intentionally for the
future, and some other things can make you happier. Pursue to make
yourself a very good person, let yourself become a very successful
person is for what? If it is for a better life, more people backfire in
the process, losing the enjoyment of freedom because of too much
emphasis on being useful. Utilitarianism prevails on campus. What
students pursue is not knowledge per se, but good job, high salary and
so on. Learning a course is not about knowledge mastery, not about
self-discovery, but how to get high marks. We are at an important
upward stage in our lives, where we are meant to learn, not achieve. I
have always felt that it is a good thing for college students to look
beyond the standards set by the world and explore another possibility.
College knowledge is an end in itself, useful gain, the enjoyment of freedom.
