Many attractions in the imperial capital are full of historical charm, but Yuanmingyuan is an exception. If you are just taking a quick trip, you may feel that it is just an ordinary place surrounded by grassland and lake water. However, if you are willing to delve deeper, you will find that there is a heartbreaking history hidden here. Near the Western style buildings of the Yuanmingyuan, the former ruins and walls no longer exist, replaced by patches of grass and trees. Several later repaired buildings also appear particularly abrupt. After walking for a while, you will see some engraved stones or signs silently telling the glory of this place in the past. The Old Summer Palace is the royal paradise of the five emperors of the Qing Dynasty. After more than 150 years of operation, it has gathered the essence of Ming and Qing architecture, and also contains Western architectural elements. This was once the permanent residence of the Fifth Qing Emperor, gathering endless wealth including jewelry, cultural relics, and books. If the Yuanmingyuan could be preserved to this day, it would undoubtedly be one of the greatest and richest museums in the world. However, the changes in history have turned all of this into a bubble. The French once proposed to burn down the Forbidden City, but the British Erkin decided to burn it because he knew that the Qing Emperor loved the Old Summer Palace. In the frenzy of robbery, those officers and soldiers not only destroyed the Yuanmingyuan, but also the Shiwei City, and the original 200000 Buddha statues disappeared without a trace. This book 'In Search of the Lost Old Summer Palace' has given me a deeper understanding of this period of history. Although I feel heartbroken, through this book, I can more clearly feel the weight of that period of history and the glory of Yuanmingyuan. It is not only a garden, but also a witness to a period of history.
