Book Review of Alice’s Adventu
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland(commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is a novel written by Lewis Carroll. This tale tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a magical world, which all kinds of anthropomorphic creatures live in, having an amazing adventure there. This book is so world-wide famous that both adults and children know and like it, and it has been translated in more than 80 languages as well as having been adapted for theatres, television and films since it was published. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre, as the narrative courses and structures that the author used in this novel, together with the characters and imagery, have been greatly influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre with no doubt.
At the very beginning of the book, when sitting on the bank and feeling board, Alice tries to catch a talking, clothed White Rabbit that she just noticed and follows it down a rabbit hole, which brings her to a weird hall where she shrinks so small after drinking a bottle written “Drink Me” and grows too large after eating a cake written “Eat Me”, just to try to get through the doors of all sizes. The tears she cries when she is in a tremendous size flood the hallway and form a swimming pool for her as she shrinks small again and a herb of all kinds of animals, who have race and tell stories while gathering together.
Catching sight of that hurrying rabbit again, Alice tries to catch up it and, having gone through a series of growing big and little as well as various weird experiences which I cannot completely describe vividly here, meeting the Cheshire Cat, Hatter, the Duchess, and many other, finally comes to a “mad” tea party, after which she enters the garden and meets The Queen of Hearts who always hangs “Off with his head” on her mouth. Alice is then invited to play a game with her and the rest of her subjects, which soon descends into chaos, as live flamingos are used as balls to play with. After this ridiculous game Alice meets the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle who then together dance to the Lobster Quadrille with her.
The tale ends with a trail in which the Knave of Hearts is accused of stealing the tarts from the Queen. The jury is composed of twelve animals including Bill the Lizard, and the White Rabbit acts as the court's trumpeter while the judge is the King of Hearts. During the proceedings, Alice surprisingly finds herself growing larger steadily. As the trail, there is totally chaos. The witnesses such as the Hatter and the Duchess’s cook are just making the trail a disaster, and with no doubt the judge and the trumpeter are the ringleaders of this judging circus. Then Alice is called up as a witness but just messes up this chaos to a worse situation. As Alice has grown back into the normal size, she is not anymore afraid of the Queen and calls the soldiers just a pack of cards, as they suddenly start to swarm over her. As she is trying to get rid of these cards, her sister wakes her up from the dream, and she finds out that all those amazing creatures are gone. She still misses that little Alice herself, the awesome adventures she has gone through and all kinds of weird animals she has met upon the wonderland, and then gradually falls asleep, dreaming about the things she has been keeping on mind.
Though this novel was written for the children, everybody including the adults can enjoy this book as nice as the kids do. We readers see the Wonderland through little Alice’s perspective and listen to her inner-monologues, which show entirely her innocence to us. The book is also appreciated for its criticism that in the Wonderland, all those human and animals living there symbolize the adulthood who consider things in the most illegal ways, so the more little Alice tries to understand why they do so and why they say this, the more she gets confused, for the reason that she is just a kid and still innocent. Moreover, the authors used many “nonsense verses” , a process of treating logic in an ironic way, to write this book, by playing strange word games with no signification and asking riddles that have no answer. So just take a travel to the Wonderland through Alice’s eyes and enjoy the adventures with her.
