"Mother wrote the note, and Laurie sent the flowers," answered Meg simply, secretly grateful that Laurie had not forgotten himself.
"Oh, I see! 'said Anne in a strange way. Meg pocketed the note as an amulet against jealousy, vanity, and false pride. The few words, and the loving truth, lifted Meg's spirits, and made her feel better by the beautiful flowers.
Meg, almost in a happy mood, picked out a few green ferns and roses for herself, and then divided the rest into delicate bouquets, which were distributed among her friends to adorn their bosoms, hair, and dresses.
She did it in such a pleasant and proper way that the eldest sister calera could not help calling her "the sweetest little thing she had ever seen," and everyone admired her little thought. This act of kindness lifted her spirits. The others ran off to show it to Mrs. Moffat, who, alone, had put a few ferns in her curls and a few roses on her dress, which became less ugly to her, and when she looked into the mirror she saw a bright, beaming face.
