This is a story set in the background of two great cities more than two hundred years ago. The fog is thick, the lights are swaying in London, the bottom of the desperate and decadent Paris.
For the vigorous revolution that took place in Paris at that time, too many people spent too much pen and ink to describe it. This is a significant change for France, even for Europe, for the entire world. The author, Dickens, is one of the most outstanding critical writers of realism in Britain. Although he did not witness it with his own eyes, he relied on his rich imagination to see the scene at that time.
"Tale of Two Cities" is hailed as the most outstanding masterpiece describing the French Revolution. I think the biggest reason may be because it is different. Unlike other works, such as Carlisle's "French Revolution", Dickens paid more attention to the joys and sorrows of the people at the bottom. Although in those days, these little people themselves did not attract the attention of the world. But the author keenly captures that these little people are inextricably linked to the Revolution. It can be said that the French Revolution itself was triggered by the power of the little people.
In this work, I saw many, many different people. Honest and kind but persecuted Doctor Manette, beautiful and gentle Lucy, elegant and noble Charles, loyal and honest Lorry, indifferent appearance, inner enthusiasm, unruly and selfless and noble Sidney, distorted the morality of human nature Mrs. Qi, the bold and loyal Miss Pross, the cruel and insidious brothers of Ephraim... complex hatred is entangled, and the cruel revenge has created more hatred. Love regenerates on the edge of hell, but at the cost of life. . This intricate scene was vividly displayed in front of me, as if to reproduce the era of irrationality.
As an excellent writer, in Dickens's works, the splendor of the language is essential. Various rhetorical techniques, metaphors, exaggerations, contrasts, humor, and sarcasm are used freely, and the artistry of the works is also brought to the top. "...So, Mr. Kruncher had to listen to how the Attorney General took Mr. Steve's tights over the jury gentlemen, and he turned them upside down; ... Finally the Master stood up , Tossed the tights inside and out, and it became clear that he wanted to cut shrouds for prisoners...." Such wonderful passages abound in the works. Therefore, every center that the author wants to express is vividly reflected. I believe this must be of great help to our usual study.
Some people say that "Story of Two Cities" describes the story of two men and a woman, but I think that those who say this must not understand the author's intention to express. If only expressing this, any work can reach the level of Lucy and Charles, so how can the advantages of The Two Cities be reflected? In my opinion, the hatred of the Defarge family and the French nobles, and the emotional problems of Lucy, Charles, and Sidney are all designed to reflect a common theme. This theme is to analyze the relationship between this great revolution and the people, and see what triggered this revolution and what this bloody storm brought to people. I think this is what the author wants to express.
