To be honest, I don't know Herodotus and Thucydides very well, and I can't quite understand this material, so I read a master's thesis of Southwest Normal University on the Internet. The following content is based on my understanding of the paper. Herodotus is the oldest historical writer whose works have been preserved so far in the West. He is known as the "ancestor of historiography". Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War is regarded by Hegel as the "absolute harvest" of mankind from the Peloponnesian War. I think that's what makes Herodotus and Thucydides outstanding historical pioneers. First, he treated myths and legends more rationally. Second, he uses more written information that is more reliable. Third, he paid more attention to literature analysis. In fact, the diversification of research methods is the result of the self-consciousness and science of historical materials criticism, and the diversification of research methods objectively promotes the deepening of historical materials criticism. Therefore, Thucydides is superior to Herodotus in the spirit and practice of historical material criticism.
