The book mainly revolves mostly around a dog---Buck. Buck experiences four owners and eventually returns to nature. I learned that Buck was a Scottish shepherd dog mating with the St. Bernard dog, so his strong feelings of his owner, stranger vigilance, loyalty, keen hearing and the huge size of the St. Bernard dog led to his innate loyalty. What impressed me most was Barker's unswerving love for Thornton---- the only identified owner in his life. It is mentioned that Barker kept Thornton in his sight and for the first time became so close to a man after leaving California. After the first two owners, suffered from human destruction and the hardest environment of life, Barker's body and mind were honed, wild is constantly called, but facing Thornton, he showed his "pet" side, but always keep alert to protect Thornton's safety. With Thornton's tentative orders for Barker to jump off the cliff, Thornton slipped into the water, and Barker tried his best to save him ashore. Buck was already the Protector of Thornton.

This is eternal loyalty and love, beyond the love between people. After Thornton and Barker met, Thornton alleviates his thoughts for his younger son and Barker finally does not have to be forced to work. The two live together, showing the ideal better life. Therefore, I think the survival of the fittest, the strong victory is particularly important only in the oppressive environment. In the loving world, wild beasts will also act in warm. Apart from the theme, my biggest regret is Thornton's death. I advocate the eternal love between Thornton and Barker, and one dog maintains the bond between nature and human society. What makes me most impressed is the love of Buck and John Thornton. After Buck had a rough time in his last host Hal, John Thornton gave him a warm home. The writer said: “Love, genuine passionate love, was his for the first time.” We can see that Buck was really happy in these days. They are not really like host and dog, but friends which can go through thick and thin together. Thornton treat Buck as his children, we can see “He saw to the welfare of his as if they were his own children.” Finally, the death of Thornton severe blow to Buck, it was his first time to kill human. It is also the last thing to tied him, that’s how he come back to nature.

To prepare for the reading seminar, we read this book and searched for some information about specific content and place. We tried our best not to lose any details in the book. Also, we looked at some videos and materials about the book and the writing background, such as Buck's lineage and character. Then, we set up two activities for the reading seminar. First, our host started the seminar and arranged each of the group members to present their speech prepared about the book. Then, after a roll of sharing, we moved on to the question part. In this part, each of us raised two questions to both group members and other classmates, and two or three students were picked at a time to answer the question. At last, we ended with a short summary about the. What I learnt from the organization of the seminar are of two aspects. On the one hand, a successful seminar requires not only attractive contents, but also members’ smooth cooperation and high spirits, which created a harmonious atmosphere and thus drew the audience in. We have invited our classmates to answer seminar questions, and they had different ideas and point of views in some of the questions, so we had a heated discussion in the seminar, and everybody was encouraged to be involved in the seminar. On the other hand, it’s wise to raise questions from simple one to a challenging one, then end up with open-ended questions, because patterns like this allow students to think in a methodical way, and participants would gradually involve in the reading seminar discussion. Those skills can be also applied to any kind of organization of discussion.
