What a person could not lose is his self-esteem.
Jane Eyre had lost her parents and was sent to Mrs Reed's house at her very young age. At that time, she was treated unfairly and cruely by Mrs Reed. But Jane Eyre had not compromise and still kept her self-esteem. She kept resisting and had a chance to be sent to school though the school's life was intolerable for a little girl. When Jane Eyre left her school and went to Thornfield to be the private teacher of Adele, she met Mr. Rochester. The most important thing was when she dared to persuit her love, she never felt that she was inferior to Mr.Rochester though she was poor, obscure, plain and little. She thought that everyone was equal and has their self esteem. People couldn't feel inferior to others because of their status and wealth.
