An old fisherman had rowed a boat for 84 days in the sea alone, On the eighty-fifth day he again sailed alone into the depths of the sea in a small boat. After three days of hard work and struggle, he caught the big marlin. But encountered the shark attack, in order to protect the marlin, he exhausted all with the shark group desperate fight.   The whole story leaves a sense of emptiness. Santiago had worked so hard to catch the marlin, but the result was still in vain. But as the famous words in this book say: a man can be destroyed, but not defeated. The main theme of the story is heroism. Santiago makes up for his age with his endurance to withstand hunger, pain and isolation.

  Although he can only bring back the bones of the dead, but during the process, he never gave up. In my opinion, he wind the competition against the big marlin for he could cut off the string and let it go, then both of them can relieve. But he never gave up his determination on beating the big fish.
