What do you think of the ending of the story?

In the end of the story, the old man still failed. The big fish he caught with all his efforts only left a pair of bones. What do you think the design of this ending? Why is the ending tragic rather than happy? What difference will it make if the ending is happy?

About the ending of the book, I think failure is common place in life. No one is born success. We must try so hard and experience thousands of times to achieve success. So as for me, the "tragic" ending is accepted, reasonable and educational.

Santiago paid a heavy price for every victory, and finally suffered irreparable failure. However, in another sense, he is also a winner. Because he did not yield to fate, no matter how hard the environment was, he fought bravely with his courage, perseverance and wisdom. Although the marlin was not saved, he defended the "dignity of the human soul" and showed "how much one can achieve". He was a victorious loser and a failed hero.
