Discuss about Laizi's philosophy of Non-action

赵青

Modern people are going through so called "spiritual crisis". How do you interpret Laozi's philosophy of Non-action? Compared with Confucious's idea, Laozi offered different solution to society. And they both have a lot of followers till now. Could you discuss about the difference between them? And do they still relevant today? Do they give you any inspirations when faced with challenges?

I think Laozi's thought of "doing nothing" contains a profound understanding of the relationship between man and nature, and contains a beneficial revelation to society, that is, people should establish a detached and selfless mind, selflessness and desire to benefit others. They have different views on social and political issues. Lao Zi's thought is of great significance in people's life today. Most people are eager to achieve.

The real meaning of Laotse's "doing nothing but doing everything" is that a person can only do everything on the basis of not acting rashly or forcefully. There is a precondition for action, which is not to act rashly. However, in reality, many people either avoid the world passively or act boldly. In the end, they are often disappointed more than hoped, and finally let themselves indulge in the negative decadence.

The core of Confucius' political thought is "courtesy" and "benevolence". He advocates "taking politics as morality". It is the most noble way to govern the country with morality and etiquette. Lao Tzu's thought uses "Tao" to explain the evolution of all things in the universe. "Tao" is an objective natural law, believing that all things have both positive and negative sides, and can be transformed from opposition.

Up to now, their thoughts are all relevant.

In the face of difficulties and challenges, their thoughts allow me to think about difficulties and challenges from another perspective, so as to better solve problems.

Lao Tzu's "Wuwei" does not mean doing nothing, nor does it mean not doing nothing, but it implies not acting rashly, not acting indiscriminately, conforming to the objective situation, and respecting the laws of nature. For thousands of years, Lao Tzu's thinking of "wuwei" has had a great impact on the Chinese nation's character, behavior, and outlook on life. Lao Tzu's idea of "wuwei" not only has existential value, but also needs to be carried forward.

Confucius and Lao-tzu's cultural character is diametrically opposite. The cultural character of Confucius is extremely positive, and the most representative of the cultural tone of Confucius is a sentence in the Analects of Confucius, which is called "knowing that it is impossible to do it". This sentence is the original words of what we usually call "doing it knowing it is impossible". It means that I know I can't do it, and I will try to do it. It expresses a cultural attitude of actively participating in social transformation. Therefore, later scholars summed up the Confucian doctrine, with two words, called "WTO." But Lao Tzu is the opposite. His cultural character is extremely negative, and the most representative of Laozi's cultural character is the six characters constantly appearing in Tao Te Ching, which is called "nothing but nothing". It means, I do nothing and I do everything. In other words, I do nothing, but I do everything.

Lao Tzu is talking about entering the world with a mind of being born. If you can't see this, you can't really understand Lao Tzu.He said that "the highest good is like water, water is good for all things without competition, and people's evil is more than the way", "the way of saints is not competition" and other words, meaning that we try to "be good for all things without any trace and deliberately".

I think what Lao Zi means is to stop worrying and listen to the destiny of heaven as much as possible. Confucius emphasized one's own efforts. What Lao Zi wanted was to follow the laws of nature. By combining the two, I understand that in the face of difficulties, we need to be not afraid of difficulties, but also to maintain a good attitude and actively face difficulties.

I believe that Laozi's thinking of "Wuwei" contains a profound understanding of the interrelationship between man and nature, and contains beneficial enlightenment for society, which requires people to establish a transcendent selfless state of mind, selflessness and desire, and benefit others. They have different views on social and political issues. Laozi's ideas have great significance in people's lives today, most of today's people are eager to achieve quick results, and Laozi's advocacy of pure heart and lack of desire has far-reaching significance for people. Confucius's benevolent spirit of "loyalty and forgiveness" should be the central value of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among all nations and countries in the world today.

The Laozi's philosophy of Non-action attempts to suggest that we should abandon a part of ourselves’ desires which are filled with our mind in the cause of sticking on the authentic faith we get hold of. The Confucious ‘s idea of benevolence and manners would teach us to give out our kindness and love to the people around us and obey the regulation. As the consequence , they are still playing an extremely significant role in modern society and making a infinite difference to our present life .They stimulate me that I should insist on my aims ,throw the distracting thoughts out and stick our helpful hand out when we face the challenges and others are getting into trouble.
